“Ow wow owww …” Anna groaned. Suddenly everything felt like it was in slow motion again. Anna opened her eyes and saw the blue butterfly over her head. She felt as if she was dreaming.

“Dopey dog, get back ’ere!” snapped Mr Upshot. “I’ve known hens that were less chicken than you!”

“The bus …!” Anna wailed as she tried to get up. Then came the SHFFF of closing doors. Anna looked up just in time to see her brother through the bus’s back window. He was laughing and pointing at her. “Wait!” Anna cried, checking her watch.

08:02:53.

“Wait, wait, wait!” Anna shouted again. She got to her feet and ran after the bus. Moments later, the bus vanished down the road.

Anna Gain was going to be late.

Again!

“No!” Anna yelled. “This can’t be happening again!”

“Are you all right?” asked Mr Upshot. Anna checked her watch.

08:02:57.

“This was my second chance!” she cried. “This was my chance to—”

08:03:00.

“Make sure you catch that bus,” someone said. “Remember, every second counts …”

Anna was inside the house again, standing by the front door. She was back where she started – or rather, when she started. Anna knew there was only one way to break the cycle … only one way to escape the same sixty seconds. She glanced at her watch.

08:02:02.

“You look a bit … tense,” her dad said. “Are you OK, poppet?”

“I will be,” Anna replied. “Just as soon as I catch that bus.”
